‘Figurative Brotherhood’ period during contemporary art’s ‘New Image’ (‘New Wave Painting’) movement ahead of ‘Brit Art’; and, post-grad and ongoing involvement with contemporary representational painting.
‘New Image’, alternatively called ‘New Image Painting’ or ‘New Image Art’ and ‘New Wave Painting’, is contemporary art’s unsung ‘painting backlash’ movement of the 1970s and 1980s which art history has registered, but is still trying to survey properly. This pivotal movement in fact awaits a major reassessment in order for critics and valuers to inform history better. It challenged conceptualism’s and minimalism’s 20th century draining of visual art’s spirit and function head-on, and paved the way for Brit Art to emerge and to enjoy humour and full human expression once more (Brit Art became a new generation ‘conceptual art’ – one which subverted the original values and ‘codes’ of the authentic movement – both of which are outside the story of this website).
